·         There is no known cause; there is no known cure.
·         The last time that a drug was invented specifically for Lupus was 51 years ago this fall.
·         The majority (over 70 percent) of those with Lupus are Latinos, African-Americans, Native Americans and Asians.
·         More than 35,000 Arizonans have been diagnosed with potentially fatal disease.  Medical experts estimate that there may be ten times as many people who have Lupus but have not yet been diagnosed.  The earlier the diagnosis, the more likely that the side effects, organ failure, etc., can be prevented.

10th Annual McDonald's McFeast

10th Annual McDonald's McFeast
Just imagine if our community came together to feed 400 people a free Thanksgiving breakfast.  Imagine over 200 volunteers sharing their Thanksgiving morning with those 4000 people in our community.  Imagine the smile on the face of an 8 year old girl riding off on her bicycle...or the smile on the face of a 4 year old on his first "big boy" bike.  Imagine over 60 children getting a brand new bike Thanksgiving morning.  Imagine hundreds on children getting a hug or a high five from Ronald McDonald and taking away a keepsake photo to show friends and family.  Imagine the smiles on the faces of families that are given a $50 gift card to a local grocery store, or the 100 people that take home a free turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.

This years McFeast is once again being held at the Estrella Vista Reception Center, 1471 N. Elesio Felix Jr. Way (10th St. and Van Buren) in Avondale.  All community partners are welcome to join us and participate in the event Thanksgiving morning at 8:00 am.

Runner Plans to Go The Distance of 1,265 Miles
To Support American Cancer Society

[Phoenix, Ariz.] – Dustin Hucks, 28, is training to run 1,265 miles from Burbank, California to his hometown of Lubbock, Texas, to help in the fight against cancer. Hucks will lace up his running shoes to start the journey on Saturday, August 15th, his 29th birthday.

When his Aunt Debbie Yoakum was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma, he wanted to do something that would make a difference. “It was exhausting to know I couldn’t do anything about her cancer,” he said. “But at the very least, I could do this and it would make a difference.”

A runner since the age of 18, Hucks has been training for this venture for quite some time. In the next week, he plans to continue running but also will find time for rest before the journey begins. The run will take approximately 24 days, working to put in almost 40 miles per day. Each day will begin before the sun comes up, running to beat the heat of the summer. During the hottest part of the day, Hucks plans to eat, rest and prepare for the second half of his daily run.

Braving the 100 degree temperatures, Hucks will be running through Arizona approximately 7 days after leaving Burbank. He plans to travel into the state on the I-10, then head North on the I-17 and then East on I-40 to New Mexico.

He is planning to raise one million dollars to help support the American Cancer Society further fund cancer research.

To follow Hucks as he makes his way over the mountains, through the valleys and across the Great Plains OR to make a donation to help him reach his million dollar goal, go to his website
www.followtherun.org.
You can also follow Dustin Hucks on twitter - @followtherun

The American Cancer Society is honored for this generous contribution of Dustin Hucks and proudly supports him in his journey.
